How do I choose the right foundation?
Article by: Sam Fine

Foundations come in many different forms and provide many different finishes. Choosing the correct one can make your whole look, so read this very very carefully.

Liquid foundations offer the lightest coverage, and provide a natural look. They’re available in water and oil-based formulas, so it’s easy for anybody, regardless of skin type, to find the right one.

Cream-to-powder formulas, on the other hand, allow you to experience the best of both worlds with the look of a cream and the silky finish of a powder. Since all cream formulas contain some level of oil, if you have oily skin these might not be for you.

Remember, selecting the right foundation is a result of trial and error, so don’t think that if it’s not right the first time it’ll never work.

How can I find the right color?
When shopping for foundation, start by selecting three shades that are close to your complexion. Test all three for trueness by applying them to your jaw line ONLY – not your hand, and definitely not the inside of your wrist. The outer perimeter of your face (hairline, jaw line) is the truest in color to the rest of your body. It is this part of your face that foundation needs to blend with easily, unless you plan to paint your whole body. Then go out into the daylight and see which of the three blends best. While you’re out there, make sure the color you’ve chosen isn’t too red or yellow for your complexion.

What’s the best way to apply foundation?
Achieving beautiful looking skin is not as simple as selecting the right base. Proper application guarantees great results. It’s important to start with a moisturizer, to ensure smooth even coverage. (If your skin in oily do not skip this step; simply use an oil-free moisturizer.) Fr quick yet flawless coverage, apply foundation with a wedge sponge. This lets you get to hard-to-reach areas around the nose and under the eyes. For the sheerest of applications, dampen your sponge. This trick helps thin the foundation, so that it can glide on better.

TIP TIP TIP
Mix one part foundation with two parts moisturizer, and apply.
