What is Pan-Africanism?

Modern pan-Africanism is about on hundred years old. It was in July 1900 that Henry Sylvester Williams, a Trinidad-born barrister, organized the first pan-African conference in London. He wanted, he stated, to 'bring into closer touch with each other the peoples of African descent throughout the world.' This first gathering was a small affair - only four representatives from Africa itself attended - but it was the beginning of a movement that would grow in the course of the century, attracting men and women around the world to an ideal of justice and human rights. Decolonise the African Mind

Even after the independence of our African countries, this did not mean decolonisation, as the colonial structures still remained intact. African leaders are themselves will mentally enslaved, as they are blind to put in place appropriate actions to unite Africans for autocentric development. Instead of thinking of themselves as Africans who can collectively benefit from the human and material resources of Africa, they continue to label themselves as Namibians, South Africans, Angolan Zimbabwean and Zambian.
