MXit connects 3 millionth user

Johannesburg - Popular instant messaging service MXit has signed up its three millionth subscriber, the company said on Wednesday.

"We continue to grow at a rate of between 9 000 and 12 000 new registered users per day," said MXit founder and CEO Herman Heunis in a statement.

"But, as our international rollout gains momentum, we expect this number will increase dramatically," he added.

MXit was officially launched in May 2005 and provides low-cost, text-based communication to cellphone users.

MXit was currently one of the largest generators of GPRS traffic in South Africa. General Packet Radio Service allowed one to use Wireless Application Protocol and browse the internet via a GPRS-enabled cellphone.

Heunis said MXit users currently logged on to its servers more than six million times daily and sent over 100 million text messages a month.
